Reggae Sumfest 2024, held from July 14 to July 20 in Montego Bay, Jamaica, once again lived up to its reputation as the pinnacle of reggae festivals worldwide. Despite a few unexpected absences, the festival delivered powerful performances and a vibrant cultural experience that resonated deeply with fans.
Reggae Sumfest 2024 was not just about the music; it was a full celebration of Jamaican culture. Attendees enjoyed authentic Jamaican cuisine from local vendors and explored the island’s heritage through cultural exhibitions. The Sumfest Global Sound Clash was held on July 17th and was indeed a nostalgic dancehall experience. Notorious International, featuring Japanese ‘Bad Gal Marie’ and her Jamaican husband Little Shabba, won the $1 million cash prize.
On July 18, 2024, the Appleton Rum Festival featured a stellar performance by Beenie Man, who performed as Moses Davis. Dressed in all white, Beenie Man delivered hit after hit, including "Zim Zimmer," "Maestro," "Toy Friend," and "Nuff Gal," proving why he remains a dancehall legend.
The two main nights, July 19 and 20 featured a stellar lineup of reggae and dancehall stars, though not without some disappointments. On Night 1, the stage was set for a high-energy showcase with performances from icons like Capleton, Aidonia, and Dexta Daps, alongside Teejay, and 450. Emerging talent YG Marley opened his set with performances of his original songs, including "Meant to Be" and "Survival." He was joined on stage by dancehall entertainer Jahshii, who performed his hit song "Born Fighter," and his brother, Zion Marley. In a thrilling surprise, their mother, Lauryn Hill, made an unannounced appearance, delivering an electrifying performance that left the Sumfest crowd in awe. Unfortunately, fans missed out on seeing Kraff, Valiant, Jada Kingdom, and Marcy Chin, who were scheduled to perform but did not appear.
Despite these absences, the artists who took the stage delivered spectacularly. Capleton’s performance was a fiery display of energy and passion, while Dexta Daps captivated the audience with his smooth vocals and commanding stage presence. Turbulence and Munga Honorable brought a nostalgic vibe, reminding everyone of the timeless appeal of classic dancehall rhythms.
Night 2 was a soulful journey through the roots of reggae. The legendary Beres Hammond delivered a masterclass in lovers' rock, serenading the audience with his timeless hits. BabyFace, making his Sumfest debut, brought a touch of international R&B flair that blended beautifully with the reggae vibes. Luciano and Anthony B offered powerful, spiritually uplifting performances that were highlights of the evening. The night also featured impressive sets from D’Yani, Ras I, and Sevana, who each added their unique touch to the evening.
The production quality at Reggae Sumfest 2024 was almost impeccable. The festival’s atmosphere was electric, with a diverse crowd of reggae lovers from around the world coming together in celebration. Despite the weather and the passage of hurricane Beryl, the patrons were positive and uplifting, an attestation to the unifying power of music.
Reggae Sumfest 2024 was a testament to the enduring appeal of reggae music and Jamaican culture. While the absence of some anticipated artists was felt, the festival Headliners and performers delivered memorable performances that left a lasting impression on all who attended. For anyone with a love for reggae or a desire to experience Jamaican culture at its finest, Reggae Sumfest remains an essential pilgrimage.
