The 2024 GRAMMY nominations were announced today and the category for Best Reggae album this year has 5 contenders:
No Destroyer by Burning Spear
Born for Greatness by Buju Banton
Simma by Beenie Man
Colors of Royal by Julian Marley & Antaeus
Cali Roots Riddim 2023 by Collie Buddz
Burning Spear's album nomination comes after his return to the music scene 15 years after his last album and an over 10 year hiatus from live performances. This year's nominations make Burning Spear's 13th nomination, with previous wins for his album Jah is Real in 2009 and Calling Rastafari in 2000.
This is Buju Banton's 8th nomination, following the nomination of his last album, Upside Down 2020, with a previous win in 2011 for his album Before the Dawn.
Beenie Man has also won for best reggae album with Art and Life in 2001. This is his 4th nomination. Simma has features from Shenseea, Shaggy, Sean Paul, TeeWay, Ms Banks, Dexta Daps, Popcaan, and many others.
This is Julian Marley's 3rd nomination. Marley and Greek producer Alexx Antaeus have teamed up after previously working on a remake of The Paragon's The Tide is High.
Notably, this is the first nomination for the Bermudian reggae artist, Collie Buddz. This album features the likes of Busy Signal, Mike Love, Luciano, Anthony B, Gondwana, Shwayze and many others.
The 66th Annual GRAMMY Awards will take place on February 4, 2024.
