The King of Lovers Rock, Beres Hammond Received Honorary Degree.

Beres Hammond

Renowned Jamaican musician Beres Hammond received special recognition from the University of the West Indies on Saturday, November 4th. He was given an honorary degree as an acknowledgment of his remarkable contributions.

Celebrating an incredible five-decade career, Beres has touched the hearts of many with his smooth and soulful reggae music, crossing generational boundaries. He is often regarded as the king of Lovers Rock, a subgenre of reggae known for its romantic and mellow tunes.

During the ceremony, Beres Hammond took a moment to remember those who inspired him throughout his musical journey, such as Alton Ellis, Stevie Wonder, and Sam Cooke. He also shared some personal stories about his upbringing and how he first ventured into the music industry. In his usual spontaneous style, he mentioned, "I don't plan things; they just happen. It's all about vibes and things falling into place at the right time. I don't sit down to write songs; I just let things unfold."

Among the distinguished individuals honored by The UWI on that day were Professor E. Dale Abel, the late Lascelles A. Chin, Rachel Manley, and Audrey Patrice Marks, all recognized during the Class of 2023 graduation ceremonies.
